History

The New Horizons Christian Church was born in 2000 as the child of two mothers, the Meade Avenue Christian Church and the East Market St. Christian Church. Our name was chosen to reflect the fact that even though our mother churches had deep roots in Akron that our new church was intentionally moving on to new places and moving ahead to new adventures. A few years ago we discerned our calling in this way: God is calling the New Horizons Christian Church to follow Jesus by demonstrating Christian love, serving our neighbors, and growing with God.

One of the best reflections of this statement of calling is our annual Back to School Party for grade school age children and their families. Each August, this free event provides haircuts, school supplies, food, and fun to hundreds of children and their families. We have growing relationships with the Betty Jane Community Leaning Center and other neighborhood organizations. Our building is home to numerous local organizations and events. We are committed to serving our part of the world in Akron, Ohio as well as to supporting ministries which seek to transform the whole world.

We have our roots in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) movement which has historically emphasized weekly open communion, baptism by immersion, the autonomy of local churches, and the responsibility of each believer for ministry.
